Artist Statement - Daniel Hart

Vertical Elements Collage

Architecture in the urban setting is strongly influenced by the motifs found in nature. In fact, "man-made" structures can be thought of as natural occurrences since humans are simply participating in an evolutionary process.

The same forces that create structure in the non-man-made world are at play when man conceives and creates structures. The result is that the structures are intrinsically related. Furthermore, man repeats the motifs found in nature in an attempt to assert his influence over these same forces that are driving him.

Trees grow tall for light, towers grow for sight (might?)
Both attempt to exercise power over their environment.

In a broader sense, I attempt to make sense of the density that is found in today's urban settings. My experience living in the cities of Paris and Geneva has profoundly affected this work. It is contrasted with the relative calm that I find in my visits to the rural areas of Massachusetts and Connecticut. It is my belief that the structures that are created in the modern city bear a strong resemblance to the forms and scale found in nature. Thus, the form and material of wood is found throughout my work.

I included some drawings along with the exhibition of B&W photography in order to provide some explanations.

My desire was to provoke viewers into creating their own connections between pieces.

The diagrams portray ways in which construction is based on the following naturally occuring elements :
form (trees become vertical columns)

scale (building is based on the dimensions of humans)

separation (all animals have a need for a minimum of breathing space or else they perish - see Edward T. Hall's book, "The Hidden Dimension")

competition (human development is a part of the natural process of evolution)
